I picked up this tip while attending a "Modeling with the Masters" program run by the NMRA. Al Boos (MMR) made quick and easy glue applicators for the attendees. The basic components are;
sewing needle (can be old)
The dowel can be a different diameter if you have scrap handy. Some people prefer a larger diameter like 3/8" because it could be easier to hold.
The eye of the needle was ground partially to form a "U" shaped end. The detail picture is below to illustrate how the needle was ground. This grinding can be done with a dremel tool with a grinding wheel.
Inserting the needle into the dowel is fairly easy. The pointed end goes into the center of the dowel. You may have to drill a pilot hole to get the needle started, once the needle is pushed in, it should stay secure. Once the needle is in the dowel you can paint the handle.
Using the tool is simple. Put a few drops of CA on a piece of plastic or glass. Touch the pool of CA with the "U" end of the applicator. You will notice that the "U" will fill with a small amount of CA. Take the applicator and touch the joint on your model, cappilary action will draw the CA into the joint. This allows for very precise application of CA on your models. I use this tool all the time when using CA to secure detail parts.
After some usage you will notice that the "U" can get clogged. If you light a match and pass the end of the applicator over the flame, the heat will remove any hardened CA that has hardened.
This is a nice quick, easy and cheap tool to add to your box. I hope you will find it as useful as I do.
